Ne-Yo Fell in Love with a Country Woman, and It Shows! Thoughts on ‘Highway 79’ Preview Songs

Today, I listened to the preview tracks from Ne-Yo’s upcoming album, Highway 79, which releases on July 10, 2026, and I’m excited! I already pre-saved the release.

The Line Up:

My love for Ne-Yo’s Music

I have high hopes based on the preview tracks I’ve listened to, and I look forward to listening to the whole album. In this musichead post, I’ll share my connection with Ne-Yo’s music and my thoughts on the four preview songs.

I’m especially tuned in to Ne-Yo’s music right now, considering I’m attending the Ne-Yo & Akon – Nights Like This Tour on my golden birthday. I pray everything works out and I attend an amazing show. I’ve loved Ne-Yo since I heard his debut hit single So Sick.

The harp in this song is such a sweet touch! The lyrics really drive the song for us emotionally-tapped in people, but that melodic harp adds an undeniable, mesmerizing flow. I love this song, whether I’m in love or especially when I’m feeling heartbroken.

I was no more than 8 years old when I heard that song, and ever since, I’ve been hooked on his earlier discography.

When I purchased my concert ticket this past February, I took it upon myself to reconnect with my love of Ne-Yo’s music, as I had been disconnected from his newer music since the mid-2010s. I know a couple of hit bangers that reached mainstream music, but other than that, I wasn’t actively playing his recent songs.

Not gonna lie, I got turned off when I heard about his romantic issues hitting the media. It can be hard to separate the artist from their art…that’s another convo for another time, though. And as a naturally polyamorous woman, I have quite a few things to say about some versions of “polyamory.” Anywho…

My Thoughts on the 4 Preview Tracks on Ne-Yo’s Highway 79

Track 1: Up Out & Gone

Initial reactions:

  • I love the energy; the lyrics are kind of sad when you really think about it, but it’s a reality many of us experience. We all need to escape sometimes! I can be one of those all-night partiers, sober & under the influence alike. I loveeeee dancing the night away. I don’t need to sip on anything strong…as long as the music is on, I’m giving all of me. It’s so Ne-Yo to write in a manner that excentuates the reckless behavior of the nighttime. We also see this in his contribution to the 2011 banger “Give Me Everything“. Craving that hedonistic lifestyle can be deliciously dangerous.
  • Sometimes, I have to tell my girls that I need one of those nights – except the kissing random strangers part, lol. When I send this song in the group chat, I want them to know the message is “No questions – I just need to escape.”

Track 4: Thinking What I’m Thinking

Initial reactions:

  • Gives country pop vibes
    • Some part of this composition reminds me of Miley Cyrus’s “The Climb“.
  • This is the perfect song for lovers who’ve lost their way. It’s a quest for rekindling that love.
  • It’s a very sweet song. It’s one that I can imagine being a hard listen if you’re currently feeling the emotions he eloquently weaves into this song.
  • This is the song that gives me hope that Highway 79 will be an amazing country-inspired album.

Track 6: Ms. Tundra

Initial reactions:

  • Leave it up to Ne-Yo to find a way to ignite my inner bad girl! I will cut up the dance floor to this song. Oh me, oh my!
  • I will be practicing in the mirror until I get on the dance floor. This song is HOT!

OMG! There’s a visualizer out already.

Track 8: Simple Things

Initial reactions:

  • It’s truly the “small” intentional actions that make relationships special – no matter their type. Those small emotional deposits add up. So many people ignore the impact of compounding “interest” in relationships.
  • I loveeeee when the beat drops.

Will You Be Listening with Me on July 10th?

From this preview, he does a great job capturing the country style but making it Ne-Yo. Ugh, I’m so excited for this album.

Let me know your thoughts! Are you tuned into Ne-Yo’s July 10 release of his country-inspired album, Highway 79?

Inspiration Behind the musichead space

musichead is my space to enjoy my first love. Inspired by Sanaa Lathan’s fictional character in Brown Sugar, I want to write about what makes the biggest difference in this world.

Music holds the most transformative healing power. As my favorite Erykah Badu song reminds us, “this one is the healer – hip hop.” I want to be a part of that healing, whether I’m creating or experiencing it.

My love for music is most inspired by Michael Jackson’s main motivation: staying tapped into what keeps our childlike spirit alive, rather than allowing the world to harden our hearts. Music invites us into a fantasy world, a space where we create the world we feel safest in. Real music is for lovers. Thank you for reading this issue of musichead. Tune in with you next time!
