Emotions Are Messengers, Not Masters

Emotions Are Messengers, Not Masters

Just Because You Feel It Doesn’t Mean You Own It

Hey boo,

Let’s talk about that emotional rollercoaster you’ve been riding. You know the one.

Up one minute, spiraling the next. Feeling everything. Overthinking everything.

Let me remind you with love: you are not your emotions.

They are messengers—not your truth, not your identity, and certainly not your master. But when you don’t pause to examine them, you begin to embody them. And that’s how folks end up trapped in cycles that feel like personality traits but are really just unprocessed pain.

What research says about your emotions:

Psychologist and emotional intelligence expert Dr. Daniel Goleman found that learning how to label and observe emotions reduces impulsivity and increases well-being. Mindfulness-based approaches help regulate the amygdala’s threat response, lowering emotional reactivity. (Goleman, 1995)

Try This: The R.A.I.N Method

  • Recognize what you’re feeling
  • Allow the feeling to exist without judgment
  • Investigate where it came from
  • Nurture yourself with truth and compassion

You can feel sad and not be a sad person.

You can feel rage and still choose peace.

You can feel unworthy and still be deeply, irrevocably loved by God.

Biblical scripture to help you transform your understanding of emotions:

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” – Jeremiah 17:9

Don’t let your emotions define your character. Let them inform your care. Emotions are information in energetic form; when you know how to read your emotions, then you can respond by giving yourself what you need to resolve this issue.

Journal Prompt:

  • What emotion have I mistaken for a personality trait?
  • What might my emotions be trying to teach me?
  • What emotions do I frequently find myself experiencing?
  • Name the emotions that I refuse to feel through my body. Why am I running away from those feelings?
